Miracles are a topic that intrigues many people. For some, it’s a matter of curiosity. For others, it’s a desperate hope. Just ask a parent praying for a miracle for a terminally ill child.
The new sermon series at Shepherd of the Hills is on the miracles of Jesus. To generate thoughts on the topic, here are some of the most-asked questions about miracles and brief responses.
1. Are the miracles in the Bible to be taken literally?
The Bible contains several styles of literature. Some are meant to be taken figuratively, such as poetry. Narrative writing is meant to be understood literally. The miracles occur in the narratives of Scripture. Therefore, miracles in the Bible are to be taken literally.
2. What is the difference between miracles and magic?
Magic is an illusion. Miracles suspend the laws of nature. A clever human being performs magic. God, who invented the laws of nature, can bypass or adjust those laws and perform miracles,
3. Why did Jesus command people to not tell others of the miracles He performed?
Often when Jesus performed miracles, people were eager to tell others what they had seen. Who could blame them? Jesus, however, knew that announcing His miracles prematurely would inflame his opponents and accelerate the path to the cross. Jesus would not go the cross until God’s timing arrived.
4. Does God still perform miracles?
Can He? Of course. Does He today? I’m inclined to say yes. I’ve heard too many stories of unexplainable things. A scan reveals that the cancer disappeared. A certain car accident ends up being a near miss. Stories like that. I don’t believe in luck. I believe God is orchestrating the events of this world and every good and perfect gift comes from above. (James 1:17)
