How to Pray for a Nation Divided over Impeachment

1 Timothy 2:1-2 tells us to pray for our leaders so that we may live peacefully: “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”

The two go hand in hand: good governance and a peaceful populace. In His Word, God invites these prayers. So let’s get to praying!

In a political climate heated up by the i-word, here are four people or groups to lift up in prayer. All face the daily struggle with sin and need the Lord’s guidance.

1. Pray for the President. While impeachment proceedings are going on, he has a job to do, domestically and internationally. Pray that he can perform his duties with focus and clarity. Anyone in the world’s most powerful office needs extra strength from the Lord, especially at a time like this.
2. Pray for Congress. Pray that God will guide House and Senate leadership in the next steps of this process. Like the president, our congressional leaders are real people who face pressures and distractions. Ask God to grant wisdom to all. 
3. Pray for opinion leaders. This includes the media and anyone who has a platform that can be used to shape public opinion or influence others. Ask God to give discernment. For many, the temptation is to stoke flames of discord for ratings or attention. Pray that opinion leaders will contribute to the common good with accurate, fairly presented information.
4. Pray for the American people. Many Americans have strong convictions about the issue of impeachment and its handling by our nation’s leaders. In a nation as large and diverse as ours, it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to see things the same way. As the saying goes, reasonable minds can disagree. Pray for civility and peaceful acceptance of the outcome.

The best way to address problems in our nation is not getting up on our soapbox but getting down on our knees. God invites our supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings.

Time to pray.
