Why I Wrote a Book about Spiritual Warfare

This week, Concordia Publishing House announced the upcoming release of my new book, Equipped: The Armor of God for Everyday Struggles. The book is about spiritual warfare and the weapons God gives us to persevere by His strength.

Why write this book? Some reasons:

Spiritual warfare pertains to all of us. Simply speaking, spiritual warfare is the ongoing battle over your spirit. In the unseen realm, a war is taking place, and you are the prize. Spiritual warfare is not only extreme cases of demon possession and exorcisms. Regular people like you and me are engaged in an unseen battle whether we realize it or not.

Too often, we’re oblivious to spiritual warfare. We mistake the true nature of the enemy. We accept lies about who we are. Our faith suffers because we’re not fighting the good fight of faith. Unaware, we’re simply rolling over while the forces of evil assault us continually.

Now more than ever, we need help! We’re under constant stress. Our personal lives are filled with anxiety. The events swirling around us put us on edge – the pandemic, political turmoil, societal unrest, economic challenges, and more. Satan doesn’t cause every calamity – he’s not omnipotent – but he does leverage adversity to discourage us and pull us away from God. And right now, the devil has a lot of material for troubling our spirits!

God wants us to fight with the weapons He gives us! He doesn’t just leave us to fend for ourselves. He arms us with defensive weapons to protect us from the evil one – weapons like truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation. He gives us offensive weapons – Scripture and prayer – to proactively fight back against the adversary.

Frequently, we fail to find comfort in the victory that is already ours. We don’t have to defeat the devil. Jesus did that on the cross. Our job is to resist the devil. Jesus did the hard work on our behalf. He gives to us the benefits of His death and resurrection. His victory is ours. We walk through this life as winners by faith in Christ.

The Bible reveals the true nature of spiritual warfare. Some verses are overtly about spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6, for example, is the Armor of God passage, the basis for the book. But other topics relate. Any verses about Satan apply. So do verses about lies and deception. So do verses about worry and anxiety. All of these subjects, and more, relate to the battle over your spirit.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:12-13)
