Worrier for Hire!

Speak Up

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

Sam was a chronic worrier.

If he didn’t have something to worry about, he would make something up. He always complained, and therefore being around him was an unpleasant experience.

But one day, when Sam stopped at the local diner for his morning cup of coffee and donut, he was smiling and humming to himself. All the men in his coffee group were amazed at this sudden change, so they asked what had happened. Sam explained that he had hired someone to do his worrying for him, so he no longer had to worry and complain.

The men were amazed and asked how much it cost to get someone to do that. Sam said it cost $1,000 per day. When they asked where he would get the money to pay this man, Sam replied, “I don’t know, but I’m not going to worry about it. That’s what I hired him to do!”

Don’t you wish you could hire someone to do your worrying for you? Better yet is to banish worry altogether! Easier said than done.

This petition of the Lord’s Prayer is the worrier’s petition. “Give us this day our daily bread.” Notice the words “day” and “daily.”

Jesus said, “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Why borrow tomorrow’s troubles and let them intrude on today?

God provides our daily bread. That means he provides everything we need to support our bodies and lives. Most important, He provides the Bread of Life, Jesus. “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.'” (John 6:35)

Every day, God says to each of us, “I’ve got this.” He provides for our daily needs. He provides for our eternal needs. Worry be gone! Contentment and peace come from being in God’s hands.

Tomorrow: Would You Have Forgiven a Nazi?

Yesterday: Needless Fret about God’s Will.

On Wednesday, July 1, we’re opening the church from 7-8 p.m. for a guided prayer experience. It’s titled “Speak Up: Prayer Vigil for Healing and Peace in America.” We’ll be walking through the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer and praying for specific needs in our nation.
