Infant Holy, Infant Lowly

Merry Christmas Eve!!

The other day, my family and I watched a spectacular production of the Christmas story at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. It was so good, we watched it twice – and enjoyed it thoroughly both times! (Great job by cast members Stephanie and Stevie Smith!)

In the production, after Jesus was born and everyone was gathering at the stable, they began to sing the hymn, “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly” (Lutheran Service Book No. 393). It’s not one of the best known Christmas carols, but it’s one of my favorites. As it was sung at the performance, I felt myself getting emotional, caught up in the moment.

The song is so sweet in its tune and lyrics. It highlights Jesus’ sacrifice in coming into the world as a baby, born in humble circumstances. The hymn is only two verses. Each brief verse starts out calmly and quickly builds in intensity, reaching its final words proclaiming the birth of Jesus.

For our sake, Jesus became infant holy, infant lowly.

Week four of Come, Follow Me is reflections on the Christmas Gospel, Luke 2:1-20. Tuesday’s devotion is titled “Jesus’ Humble Birth.” The closing prayer is simple and profound:

God, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to be the Savior of the world. Help us to be humble as His birth was humble. Amen. (Page 29)

Jesus’ humble birth inspires us to be humble. To set aside our pride. To serve others. To make ourselves lowly so that others may be lifted up.

“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)

God bless your celebration of our Savior’s birth!
