This past weekend’s sermon was the opener in a series on Jesus’ miracles. The text was Matthew 8:5-13, “Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant.” Here are some key Scripture passages referenced in the sermon, along with brief reflections.
“Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book.” (John 20:30) “Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.” (John 21:25)
The Bible recounts 36 specific miracles that Jesus performed. Apparently He performed many more. Don’t you wonder what else He did? He did more wonders than could fit in a book!
“Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.” (Matthew 8:8)
“Only say the word.” The speaker, a Roman commander called a centurion, understood authority and knew that Jesus had it. By the Word of the Lord, the universe was created. By the Word of the Lord, sins are forgiven. By the Word of the Lord, a suffering servant was healed. Nature obeyed the voice of its Maker and Master.
“Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.” (Matthew 8:10)
The centurion’s faith impressed Jesus! I want to have that kind of faith! God brings about strong faith in a variety of ways, some easy and some hard. Whatever the road, a strong faith is worth it all.
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” (John 11:25-26)
Jesus’ greatest goal for us is that we have faith in Him. Physical healing is important, but not His highest priority. Faith is. Healed bodies die eventually. By faith, even though we die, we live with Him forever.
“Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified.” (1 Corinthians 1:22)
What are you looking for in your faith? Some expect a show of proof. Others seek intellectual satisfaction. When we find the wisdom of God in the cross of Christ, we’ve found God’s greatest treasure! Christ crucified – a simple message with eternal implications!
